Subject:Urgent Appeal for Human Rights Intervention in the Case of Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol

To whom it may concern at Amnesty International,
We urgently call upon your organization to examine and respond to the recent grave violations of human rights committed against former President Yoon Suk-yeol of South Korea.

On August 7, 2025, former President Yoon was forcibly extracted from a detention facility by a team associated with a special prosecutor’s office. According to his legal team, approximately ten individuals physically seized the former President — who is 65 years old — by his arms and legs in an attempt to move him to a vehicle against his will. Despite his protests and repeated requests to be released due to extreme pain, he was allegedly lifted while still seated, causing the chair to collapse and Mr. Yoon to fall hard onto the ground, suffering injuries to his back and limbs.

His lawyers report that the incident involved:
Physical coercion amounting to degrading treatment,
The denial of medical carein a timely manner,
Violation of the right to remain silent, as Mr. Yoon had clearly declared his intent to refuse interrogation,
And a public display intended to humiliatea former head of state.
It is deeply concerning that such actions were carried out not only with excessive force, but also under threat of criminal punishment to his legal representatives if they intervened. His legal team was allegedly told to leave or face charges of “obstruction of justice.”

These measures reflect a pattern of politically motivated persecutionand raise significant questions regarding due process, proportionality of enforcement, and respect for fundamental human dignity — all of which are protected under international human rights norms.

We respectfully urge Amnesty International to:
Issue an urgent inquiry and statement of concernregarding the treatment of Mr. Yoon,
Dispatch an independent human rights observerto assess the conditions and legality of the actions taken,
Call on the South Korean government to ensure non-discriminatory application of justiceand the protection of all detainees' rights, including political figures.
This case sets a dangerous precedent for the treatment of political figures and may signal a regression in democratic norms and the rule of law in South Korea.
